Healthcare Professionals
Florastor®, the #1 probiotic worldwide,*3 provides the unique benefits of a yeast-based probiotic. The World Health Organization defines probiotics as "live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host."†6 Florastor is a non-pathogenic yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii lyo, that is lyophilized for optimal cell viability and has been shown to promote intestinal health†4 in numerous publications. To see why Florastor is a better choice than bacterial probiotics, take a look at our Florastor Versus Bacterial Probiotics comparison chart.
Administration
When stored at room temperature, Florastor maintains an optimal level of living cells.
Note: Florastor should not be mixed in alcohol-containing beverages or food and beverages above 122˚F.
Options for administering Florastor:
- Swallow the capsule whole.
- Open the capsule or packet and empty the contents on your tongue. Follow immediately with a 4 oz. drink of water or juice.
- Open the capsule or packet and sprinkle over semi-solid food (applesauce, yogurt, etc.).
- Open the capsule or packet and dissolve the contents in liquid (water, juice, milk, formula, etc.).
Enteral Feeding Administration
To reduce the risk of accidental contamination of central lines by Saccharomyces boulardii lyo, healthcare providers should follow standard good practices: always change gloves after handling and do not open Florastor capsules or sachets in the vicinity of patients with central lines. Saccharomyces boulardii lyo can attach to the gloves during mixing of Florastor solution and enteral feeding administration. Used gloves should be removed, turned inside out, and discarded immediately followed by proper hand-washing procedures. Taking these steps will avoid the accidental transfer of Saccharomyces boulardii lyo near patients with central lines (see Contraindications and Warnings).
- Mix Florastor solution
Dissolve the contents of a Florastor capsule or packet in 30 mL (1 oz.) of water and transfer to a 50 mL (1.7 oz.) syringe.
- Administer Florastor solution
Push Florastor solution from the syringe through the enteral feeding portal. Immediately following administration, always flush the enteral feeding portal with at least two 50 mL (1.7 oz.) syringes of water.
