Saccharomyces boulardii:
a tropical strain of yeast first isolated from lychee and mangosteen fruit in 1923

History

The active ingredient in Florastor is lyophilized Saccharomyces boulardii, a probiotic derived from a tropical yeast found naturally on the skin of lychees and mangosteens. French scientist Henri Boulard discovered the strain in Indochina in 1923.

In 1947, the founders of Biocodex met with Henri Boulard and arranged to purchase the rights to his strain of Saccharomyces boulardii. This strain of Saccharomyces boulardii is referred to as lyophilized because of its unique manufacturing process; therefore it is labeled Saccharomyces boulardii lyo.

The production of Saccharomyces boulardii lyo is based on an original manufacturing method called the lyophilization process, to which Biocodex also purchased the rights. Lyophilization is a state-of-the-art dehydration process that removes water from a living cell by transforming the solid directly into vapors without first transitioning into liquid. This process helps ensure the quality of the product, the viability of the cells, and stability over time.

Biocodex still holds the patent on this strain and its unique lyophilization process.

Backed by more than 50 years of clinical research and adherence to the highest pharmaceutical production and safety standards in Europe, Florastor probiotic is the #1 probiotic worldwide*3 and is now widely available on the shelves at major retail pharmacies in the United States.
